Let the Devil Sleep Dave Gurney No 3 A Novel A Dave Gurney Novel John Verdon Books
I enjoyed the first two novel in this series, but this novel did not wrap up in a satisfactory way. It's supposed to be a mystery novel, but there were extraneous clues which were never explained, and plot line seemed unmotivated. I had the impression that the author hastily tried to wrap it up before some publishing deadline. I don't think I will be reading further novels in this series.

Let the Devil Sleep Dave Gurney No 3 A Novel A Dave Gurney Novel John Verdon Books Reviews
This was a very slow to start read. I struggled with connecting with any of the characters and almost stopped reading the book completely. But perseverance was rewarded when the action finally clicked into gear. The characters became more than one-dimensional, the writing was crisper/tighter and therefore I cared how the story worked out. Maybe if I had read the previous books with Gurney as the main character I could have appreciated the pace. I would not recommend this as a stand alone book.
I really like the way John Verdon writes, and although this book was quite decent, it was in my opinion, his weakest effort to date. This book had a genuine twisty plot, good developed characters and an undectible ending. But, in my opinion, it was simply just too long.
I also find Madelene to be quite annoying with her wholesome aura. Her character is too tangential to the story. Moveover, I really do not care about her loud wardrobe issues and her nagging ways. I think that Verdon is a real good writer who puts in a lot of hard work that ultimately pays off for him and his readers. I do look forward to reading his upcoming works.
I love this series and unfortunately am on the last book now. The first one played a little too cutesey with odd names, but that was a small quibble for a wonderful mystery series with interesting characters. After the 1st book the name issue disappeared
I really wanted to love this book, but I did like it. It started off slowly but gave promise. You have a retired detective who'd rather do nothing but wallow in his pain while he has a beautiful wife who knows how to appreciate living. A young journalist enters the man's life and he starts to find purpose again. But I found that parts of the story moved slowly with lots of narrative and the main character thinking about the investigation over and over again. Parts seemed repeatitive. Some scenes would have been better played out than recapped in a step-by-step summary after the fact.
This was an exceptional book...one that I could not put down...and I love booms that I cannot put down. Nothing seemed deliberately created to get the pieces of this mystery to fit together.
I like Dave Gurney because he and his family were typical and believable characters. I enjoyed his quiet life on his farm. The progression of the plot was believable.
I will continue to read the rest of this series by John Verdon.
This is the first book in this series that really engaged me right from the start. Verdon creates a complex problem with plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader caught up in the story. In what felt like no time at all I found myself a hundred, 200, then 300 pages in.
But this book is not without the problems that almost made me give up on these books.
Verdon still spends too much time in Dave Gurney’s head, exploring every idea and emotion that crosses his mind in great depth. Sometimes an issue gets gnawed over in several chapters. This could be seriously trimmed back with no loss of quality.
Madeline, too, still exhibits some passive-aggressive traits (much reduced from the first two books but still there) in her interactions with Dave, and that’s wearing a bit thin as well.
Both, while giving the reader more fully developed characters, tend to slow the flow of the story.
I like the Dave Gurney character. I like how he's broken, and has to learn to move through his pain and his past, and I like his insight, and I like that he's not perfect.
However this book was more like an author's first book. The supporting cast - including Gurney's son, and Kim, and even Gurney's wife - are all written like they're still stuck in the first draft. Kim started off to be a likable, complex character, but after a dozen or so pages she became as annoying as Kim Bauer on "24". Gurney's son was a one-dimensional mess, and Gurney's wife took a few steps back as a decent supporting character. Any character who uses the world "officious" twice in one book should be given a heavy re-write.
The cooking scenes are more memorable, actually, then the plot -- Verdon seems to have a thing for writing food scenes, mushrooms in particular. It's a bit annoying. We know that characters have to eat - just say that they eat. It's a detail that used sparingly is effective, but Verdon's a little heavy-handed with his foodie-ness.
The plot is the typical "only Gurney can solve it through determination, skill, and luck" thing.
I really wanted to like this. I had just come off reading the new Chelsea Cain book, which was the weakest of the six in her series, and now I've read the weakest in the Gurney series. This is what happens when one becomes too attached to an author - they rarely fail to eventually disappoint. And they move from "pre-order excitement" to "eh, I'll get the next one at the library."
I enjoyed the first two novel in this series, but this novel did not wrap up in a satisfactory way.
