DEAD I WELL MAY BE by Adrian McKinty is Book 1 of his Michael Forsythe series.
The book is narrated by Michael, often giving the reader a hint at what action is to come.
He has left Belfast, Northern Ireland at age 19, and is recruited by the Irish crime boss, Darkey White in New York City.
This is a thriller; very suspenseful; gritty; peppered with violent, greedy, totally amoral bad-boy thugs who daily commit acts of unimaginable cruelty and violence.
Descriptive words that come to mind include: dirty, filthy, bugs, rats, heat, humidity, sweat, wounds, deaths (often very casual) and betrayals. And these words apply to New York. I would have to add more if I was to describe the Mexican prison he finds himself in.
Michael’s childhood, background and environment - all seem to predict his current life as an amoral thug, thief, murderer and torturer, yet he does not seem unintelligent. He often muses on philosophical thoughts (reminding me of Sean Duffy) and seems (at times) to want to humanize his lifestyle and situation. Just when one thinks there is room for empathizing with or redeeming our Michael, a violent act will hurl you back into the reality of Michael’s life.
I did like the complex characters and the suspense of the plot, but one needs a strong stomach.

This story of an Irish escaping from Northern Ireland's troubles and ending up enmeshed in criminal activity is a worthwhile tale of betrayal and revenge. Michael Forsythe joins the enterprise run by Darkey White and begins a life of crime. At one point he is sent to Mexico with other members of the gang to trade money for drugs, only to find himself a part of a sting operation by Mexican authorities and imprisonment in a horrible prison. He and his fellow gang members share a cell and are shackled and relatively immobile, with access to the outside world no more than once a week. No other prisoners speak English. Food is poor and only a slop bucket serves the needs of the group.

A person immersed in this situation necessarily resorts to imagination. McKinty uses this setting to engage in pages of free verse as Forsythe creates two countries on the ceiling, two countries engaged in warfare, with armies shifting as the sun or rainfall alters the appearance of the ceiling. This was, for me, a quick and unfruitful part of the book.

Forsythe escapes from the prison, the only one of the group to do so. The description of his escape and his travels through Mexico are well written. Until, that is, McKinty again turns to free verse to memorialize Forsythe's hallucinations and confrontation with a hurricane. Again, this became a page turner for me as I sought to get back to the action.

Eventually Forsythe returns to NYC and somewhat improbably joins a Dominican gang. This suits Forsythe's desire to seek revenge on Darkey White, who arranged for the Mexican drug sting, intending to have Forsythe rot and die in prison. This also serves the aims of the Dominicans, who want to take over Darkey White's territory. The unveiling of Forsythe's revenge is well done and has a few surprises.

On balance, this was a worthwhile read. Although I could have done without the free verse, I can forgive any Irish author for the effort to add some "literature" to what is otherwise a good mystery The snippet at the end has lured me to acquire the next Forsythe installment.
This was my first exposure to Adrian McKinty, and his first (anti)hero, Michael Forsythe. Forsythe is a hoodlum from Northern Ireland who emigrates to the U.S. seeking a job. He gets a job with a New York Irish crime syndicate, and although his on-the-job performance is impressive, he causes himself a load of trouble by sleeping with the boss's girlfriend.

The boss tries to rid himself of Forsythe, but is ultimately unsuccessful. Forsythe must survive under brutal conditions, and keeps his motivation up solely with thoughts of bloody revenge.

In its vengeance-centric plot contours, this book reminded me a lot of Donald Westlake's implacable Parker novels. But Michael Forsythe, unlike Parker, has feelings. Indeed, the book's style verges on poetry at times; certainly, McKinty's writing is far more lyrical than most crime writers. Of the well-known crime authors out there, McKinty reminds me most of Dennis Lehane in terms of his style of writing.

I've read six McKinty books by now, and this one, along with the first of his Sean Duffy trilogy, is the best. The Bloomsday Dead is a good enough closer to the Forsythe trilogy to make it worth one's while to read the second one for the sake of completeness.

Definitely read this if you're into crime fiction, and especially crime fiction that's written outside the usual stripped-down stylistic conventions of the genre. Adrian McKinty is a reliable producer, and this is probably the best he's done to date.
