I am not sure why I would want the h being stuck with this guy. In the end he uses the h, humiliates, tortures and even dehumanizes the h all for his own selfish purpose. Even though he does this because he believed he had been wronged, the degree to his cruelty was not that of a H or a decent human being. At first he excuses his behavior by claiming ignorance to how much he is hurting the h. But even when he is fully aware of the pain he is causing her, he continues to use her and exploit her gift. Just when you do not think he could be any more cruel, he degrades her even further in front of his people and her family. I am at a loss as to how this character would be considered "honorable." Then the only thing he has to do to get his HEA is go and retrieve the h back from where she has ran away. The h has no second thought of being with a man that could behave so callously towards another human being. No thought to the degree of his cruelty to her or how much his hatred could rule his behavior. If you would like to read a book with a similar plot where the H feels that the h betrayed him read Lady Gallant. In this book the H also behaves badly but the difference is that the readers sees the change in the H once he realizes how much he has hurt the h. Once he realizes the damage he is inflicting, his behavior begins to change. The h also realizes the kind of man that the H is and tries to distances herself from him. There is no easy resolution and the author does a great job of vindicating the H. At the end of the book, the readers know that the H is indeed a man of character and that the h is strong person that will not allow herself to ever become a victim again. A vindication that this book was sorely missing.

This is the second in Lowell's medieval trilogy set in the time of King Henry after the first crusade when knights are returning to England for their rewards. The 3 in the series are Untamed, Forbidden and Enchanted. I gave the first one 5 stars as well and this one is equally enthralling. This is the story of a legend and a girl named Amber who is one of the Learned ones and has the gift of discerning truth from falsehood. But anyone's touch causes her pain and to discern truth she must touch. The legend says that a nameless man will come to her in shades of darkness and she may claim him heart, body and soul...ah but there is the possibility of death there, too. When Amber meets the warrior whose memory was taken from him, she is instantly his as she can touch him with only pleasure as the result. They cannot keep their hands off each other and even as Amber suspects that the warrior is Duncan the Scots Hammer--and her enemy--she cannot help but give him her heart and her body. Duncan, as she calls him, for it means "the dark warrior", struggles with a returning memory all the while he is becoming a part of Amber's world. It's a heart wrenching romance well done by Lowell. And she does a great job of making the unlikely seem plausible. It's well written, historically well placed and the characters rich in development. I do recommend reading the books in order, however, as it's really one long story and well worth the read!
This book had a very strong and entertaining beginning but the ending was not very nice. The hero never apologizes for mistreating the heroine.
Great hero in Duncan of Maxwell, the Scots Hammer, and heroine in Amber the Learned. Romance, passion, betrayal, and magic before the HEA. I liked the lyrical timbre of the story.
What I didn't like is the big climatic buildup regarding the dark prophesy was ridiculously waylaid by a simple solution which annoyed me. I felt like there were no wrap ups to the story; and, many unanswered questions left.

I read this book a few years back and really enjoyed it but re-reading it again now was a disappointment. I agree with the other 2 star reviewer about the H being a terrible ass. I enjoyed the first part of the book where there was the immediate connection between the two main characters. It was all very beautiful and well written. Unfortunately once the H gets his memory back and becomes a terrible person, I really struggled. I've never been a fan of stories where the H wants the h to become his mistress. This one is worse because he wants to annul the marriage to the h, marry someone else and then take the h as his leman. All of this is very publicly stated and I don't think he could have maligned the h more if he tried. In the end after she leaves him and he's so broken, he isn't the one who comes up with the solution to save the day and he only goes after the h because of his state. He certainly never grovelled enough and he didn't make up for the way he treated her. Disappointing.
The author is an incredible writer with great ideas and the only thing that saves this book is all of the interesting side stories and paranormal elements.
This was almost a 5 star, but she lost it close to the end. The beginning was very sensual and good read. I enjoyed how much Amber and Duncan were drawn to each other. Yes Duncan was a bit of an jerk after he gets his memory back. Some of it was unknown that he was hurting her. He was hurting too and felt no way out so he blamed her for it, since she caused him to forsake his vow to Dominic. However that was not really my problem. It did bring down the rating a little, however I think what really did it for me was the scene where Amber gives her last dig effort with Duncan, before she decides there is no hope. I just didn't feel that it work well in the story, and found it kind of lame. Duncan could have easy gotten himself out of the situation. I guess it was suppose to mean he didn't but she made it seems like he did at first. Therefore he could have ended it at the beginning. She would have been better off with Duncan just coming to Amber again and then Amber making an attempt while he was there. Mostly a very good story, though some people will not be able to excuse the way Duncan acts and will not like the book. It is a heart wrenching type of book though.
