Pamela Belle has a talent for recreating a period of history, and this is apparent in The Moon in the Water. As she would later do in her Wintercombe series, she writes of a family struggling to survive the war between the Royalists and the Parliamentarians in mid 17th century England and Scotland. I confess I preferred the Wintercombe series which deals with Monmouth’s rebellion and William of Orange’s invasion as well as the earlier struggle because you get a better understanding of what was happening in England during the last half of the 17th century and how the events affected the lives of people living through them. Belle’s protagonists in The Moon in the Water, Thomazine and Francis Heron, are three-dimensional although the antagonists (with the exception of Francis’s oldest brother) are not as well-developed and the motives for some of their actions are a bit murky.

I enjoyed this novel very much and recommend to anyone who enjoys historical fiction.

Great book...after you get about 1/4th of the way through it. I felt like the beginning was sooooo incredibly slow moving. But my perseverance paid off when the pace picked up and it became quite interesting. I'm reading the 2nd book in this series now. Thank goodness these are part of the Unlimited Library...I might have felt it unnecessary to continue the series. If you love history and a complicated plot with a LOT of characters to follow, you will enjoy this.
Left orphaned (but wealthy) at age ten with her wardship sold to her cousin Simon Heron, Thomazine joins her cousins at the family's estate, Goldhayes. Although she loves all of Simon's children, third son Francis has a special place in her heart and they form an unbreakable bond while children that only intensifies when Francis returns from college. The elder Simon dies and the estate and Thomazine's wardship is now run by Francis' elder and very intractable brother Simon. Thomazine must now find a way to convince Simon to break the betrothal to her cousin Dominic Drakelon (made when she was ten), as well as to mend the deep enmity between the two brothers so that she and Francis can marry.

As the tensions between King Charles and Parliament heat up into Civil War, the women and children of Goldhayes retreat to the easier defended Ashcott, Thomazine's family home, as the men join forces in support of the King. A siege of Ashcott has deadly consequences and further exacerbates the tension between the two brothers - does Thomazine have the courage to risk everything for love of Francis? Will Cousin Lucy find happiness with the Roundhead officer? That's all I'm telling, any more would give the whole thing away.

While it's a bit slow at the start as the author sets up the extensive Heron family and their convoluted relationships (they intermarry just a tad), once the Civil War broke out things really started to cook along and I had a hard time putting this one down. I loved loved loved the relationship between Thomazine and Francis - it's so refreshing to have true love without all that prerequisite sex we're stuck with in today's novels. The author did a nice job of bringing the period to life, letting us see the customs, clothing and foods of the day. I liked seeing the impact of the war on the country folk as opposed to the nobility, as well as the difficulty in really hating one's own countrymen no matter what side of the conflict they're on. The author ends this one with quite a cliff-hanger so be prepared to have the next in the trilogy The Chains of Fate ready and waiting for you. Argh! I'll have to wait at least one more day (if not more) before my copy arrives. 4/5 stars and only for the slower start - otherwise it would be a solid five.
Although the story was interesting the poor skills of the writer spoiled the book. Some of the sentences were so confusing I had to read them more than once to understand the thought she was trying to convey. Her characters often acted quite out of character. For instance, the heroine who was portrayed as steadfast, loyal and courageous married a man she very much disliked right after her fiance was supposedly killed by said fiance just because she was afraid to say "no". Other characters did the same often enough that they lost all credibility. I won't be reading any more books by this author.
This was a very well written historical romance. It is the first book in a series and the main couple's story does not finish until the second book, Chains of Fate.
It's written from the heroine's perspective. The characters are all very well developed with human flaws and foibles.
It has a very slow but consistent pace. This is not a quick read. It is a very long book with a lot of facts about the politics and civil war in England around 1642 and how it affects the Heron family.
It drew me in at the beginning but needed a little patience to continue mostly because of the historical information. The war is practically a character in this story. However, it was well worth the time it took to read.
I found myself irritated with some of Thomazine's decisions, I could not have been as patient as she. I chalked most of that up to the period in which they lived. When a letter arrives three months after being sent, if at all, problems don't get solved quickly.
Francis and Thomazine are separated a lot and I prepared myself to be really mad if they never got together. I won't spoil it for you. You'll just have to see for yourself.
I gave it four stars because the overwhelming details of the war and individual battles was a tedious for me, but you may enjoy that sort of detail.

The Moon In The Water by Pamela Bell is the first book of a trilogy.It is very well written and captivates the reader from the first pages. You will fall in love with the main characters and will want to follow them into the next novel Chains Of Fate.
I had a difficult time getting into this book. Didnt finish, maybe will try again later. I just got bored.
